3 out of 5 stars really really wanted to like these   August 19, 2010

I needed a pair of walking shoes. When I found these I was in love with how cute they are. Honestly, this desire to like them took 6 months to play out, to where I can finally admit: they are not comfortable shoes for walking.

On the positive side, the cushioning is A++ . I notice a huge improvement over other walking shoes. Now onto the daily use. Immediately after putting them on and going for a short walk, the backs of my ankles (Achilles tendon area) were split open from rubbing on the back of the shoes. I thought this was just breaking in the shoes, but this rubbing didn't stop until I purchased thick heel inserts --which I can only wear on one side. If I try to wear whole foot inserts to help, then there is not enough room in the shoe and I get chafing on the top of my toes instead. The way the heel is designed, it curves slightly inward from the bottom of the shoe to the top that rubs along the Achilles tendon; indenting in exactly the wrong spot. I keep thinking my skin has toughened up enough to wear these with just socks, but no, I must put on a thick bandage or other wrap, or the heels rub the backs of my ankles raw again.

Also, and this is minor, they squeaked for the first few weeks. This eventually went away, and strapping them tightly seemed to help.

If the heel was redesigned, I would love to buy another pair --in every other way they are great shoes, but not being able to wear them without pain and damage is a deal breaker for me.

4 out of 5 stars velcro is awful but will buy again   August 2, 2010

Luckily, these sneaks are not too expensive. They are super comfy and lite...the velcro wore out after 6 mos. but because they are the cheapest mary jane sneakers (compared to allarounds, meutralizer, columbia and ecco) i will try them again.

3 out of 5 stars My First Ryka's   July 9, 2010

These are OK everyday shoes. They broke in nicely, but if I wear them all day, they start to hurt the tops of my feet. The velcro is also annoying because it comes undone alot. I think they are nice looking, sporty shoes though. These are my first Ryka's and I would purchase the brand again, but probably not their Mary Jane's.

5 out of 5 stars Good fit - comfortable walking shoe   April 10, 2010

These Rykas feel true to size. They are not too short and not too narrow. The only drawback is the tenacity of the velcro on the straps. This is my second pair of Mary Jane Rykas. The Velcro weakens after awhile. It does not keep me from buying Ryka Mary Janes. All I do is sew on more velcro when the Ryka Velcro wears out.

I am a nurse in a hospital with three separate building. I also park in a parking garage. This means lots of walking throughout an 8 hr workday. These shoes feel good on my feet all day. I highly recommend them for those who do lots of walking.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty clunky but very comfy!   March 22, 2010
Forced to buy this book (Michigan, USA)

There are clearly a walking shoe, not a shoe that is good for walking...in other words, a clunky, basically pretty ugly, unflattering shoe that is amazingly comfortable. I bought them for a trip and hopefully my pants will hide most of their hideousness. REALLY REALLY UGLY. REALLY REALLY COMFY....I sure wish I could find a genuinely CUTE walking shoe. I went up a 1/2 size based on reviews at Zappos. Glad I did...the toe is short...now the heel slips, but that gives room for a sock. Because once you put these on, you might as well wear socks since any thought of daintiness is out the door!
